NEW ORLEANS -- This is what passes for a skate park in New Orleans.
The makeshift venue under the interstate in Gentilly is the only place skateboarders like Dwayne Davis can go to work on their skills.
We can't really like practice, whatever, to really get in our zone because the streets are messed up, Davis said.
This vacant piece of land near Deslonde and Galvez in the Lower Ninth Ward is where some big names want to develop a state of the art skate park.
The names include New Orleans rapper Lil Wayne, Mountain Dew and Brad Pitt's Make it Right Foundation.
Pastor Charles Duplessis said the community met to discuss the project.
The majority of the people in the meeting, they agreed we can work with it, but we got to get details, get a plan for the future of the project. Also, how can we sustain it? Duplessis said.
The park would be designed by the nationally recognized California skate parks to echo the landscape of the Lower Ninth Ward and celebrate its rebirth after Hurricane Katrina.
They look at things like this as a catalyst to bring more opportunity to a depressed area of our city, Duplessis said.
And an opportunity for skaters to have some fun.
You get to practice all your tricks and stuff, you know what I mean, Davis said. It will be awesome.
Lil Wayne and some folks from Mountain Dew are expected to be down here in the Lower Ninth Ward on Aug. 29, the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, to officially break ground on the new skate park.
